Obituary of George F. Stone, Jr.
George F. Stone, Jr., age 84, of Audubon, PA, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
Born, July 14th, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, son of the late George F. Stone, Sr. and the late Eutha Stone (née Stickles). George spent his formative years in Milwaukee, WI, where he graduated from South High School. After a brief time at Carroll College, he enlisted in the Air Force. He received a nomination for the Air Force Academy by Joseph McCarthy, but turned it down because he was only months away from flight school graduation. As a second Lt, he received his wings and was the youngest pilot in the Air Force. He served four years and left the Air Force to join the NJ Air National Guard. While working at Dupont, he met his future wife, Peg Sawyer. Shortly after George and Peg were married in 1961, he was deployed to France to support efforts in Berlin.
Upon return to the US, Peg and George started a family. George continued a career in the paper industry eventually becoming a General Manager at a Willamette Industries.
George retired in 1999, and split his time between Florida and PA.
George loved golf and was active at both Manufacturers Golf and Country Club (serving on the board and numerous committees) and Fiddlesticks Golf Club (serving on numerous committees).
George loved his family. He was very close with his grandchildren and always lit up when he was around his new great grandchildren.
George was always a gregarious person able to make friends wherever he went. His energy, humor and inclusiveness has left an impression on countless people who had the opportunity to be involved with him.
George has been a resident of Shannondell at Valley Forge for the last three years, formerly of Skippack, PA and Fort Myers, FL. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church of Audubon.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret A. “Peg” Stone (née Sawyer) and daughter in-law, Karen Stone.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Stone (née Robison) of Audubon, PA; two sons, George F. "Scott" Stone of Worcester, PA and David (Lisa) Stone of Pottstown, PA; daughter, Kathleen (Randall) Younker of Royersford, PA; and two sisters, Nancy (William) Cressman of Avalon, NJ and Susan (Robert) Fine of Milwaukee, WI. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
His Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 10:30 AM from St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, 2725 Egypt Road, Audubon, PA 19403. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM at the Church.
Interment will be private in Trinity Christian UCC Cemetery, Skippack, PA.
