I knew Billie in high school. We went to PW together, both played sports there and so, we were friendly. His nickname was Ernie because he resembled Ernie on a tv show, My Three Sons. We both went on to college at West Chester State College( now University) and saw each other from time to time as we were down at South Campus with classes and around the campus with our team practices , etc. He wasnt just a great athlete though, he was genuinely a really great guy! I am so sorry for his family’s loss and will pray for them! Rest In Peace Bill!

I met Bill aka Ernie back in the 1970’s through a high school friend who went to West Chester and was part of the rugby club. A greater guy you’ll never meet!!
We all had waaay too much fun from 1972 the late 1970’s from West Chester to Sea Isle City. Haven’t seen Ernie in over 30 years, but the memories will last forever.
RIP Ernie. I’m sure he’s already picked up a coaching gig on the other side. That’s why he got the call!

Of all the wrestlers on the great West Chester State teams from 1971-1975, Ernie (Bill) Racich was probably the most well-liked and most popular. We met as freshmen at West Chester State and I was 118-pounder so I had the fun and privilege to practice with him every day.
As hard as though practices were, Ernie somehow always made them fun, you couldn't help but smile when you saw him.
I was an average wrestler and he was outstanding, I rarely was able to "win" against him as we practiced our drills and went live, yet he always treated me (and everyone) like close friends and equals.
Everyone loved and respected him. I ended up spending 20-years active duty in the Navy and didn't get to follow his outstanding coaching career, but I know he spent those 40 coaching years developing winners on and off the mat.
I'm so sad because he was in such good shape and had so much more to give. My most heartfelt condolences to his wife, son, granddaughter, all his brothers and sisters and everyone in his family, his Ursinus wrestlers and all his close friends.
His legacy will live on forever and I wouldn't be surprised if his granddaughter ends up being a pretty good wrestler... I have only the most fond memories of you Ernie, you were a great guy, awwww and you're gone much much too soon.
Rest in Peace Bill, you will be missed.

Tribute to Coach Racich:
As many people know Coach Racich for his Wrestling Accomplishments/Coaching, I know Coach for a completely different sport that many would be surprised to know that he coached. It was around 1980 and I was a scrawny 85 lb 9th grader who grew up on food stamps, welfare and in a broken down trailer. Our high school (Spring Ford High School) was starting a soccer program. However, we didn't have a full time coach, so Coach Racich filled in as our coach. I remember Coach telling us that he didn't know a lot about soccer, but that he would guarantee that we would be the best conditioned team in the conference. Boy was he right. In the heat of August, he had us running hills (backwards), doing bear crawls and firemen carries. We weren't that good of a team, but we sure could run all day.
Up to this point in my life, I never had a father or even a male figure to provide me encouragement or even to just say that I was doing good. Coach Racich was THIS person for me. Often, his words of encouragement were the only positive words I would hear for the entire day. He instilled upon me that it didn't matter what my size was as long as I tried my best and gave maximum effort. He believed in me and more importantly, he got me to believe in myself. He never pitied me, but rather pushed me to be the best that I could be and to believe that hard work pays off.
Due to the instability in my home, I attended 4 high schools in 3 years (2 in my senior year) and lost contact with Coach until many years later. However, I never forgot Coach: his lessons of life, the kindness he displayed towards me, and the confidence he instilled in me that I could do something with my life regardless of size, stature or economic background. The compassion/guidance you showed toward that scrawny 85 lb pound kid all those years ago, has had a significant impact on my life and all those I have come into contact.
I am proud to say that I am now a Retired Naval Officer with over 22 years of honorable service. Additionally, I am the first person in my family to graduate college, become a military officer and to travel around the world. Additionally, I have been married for over 27 years, have two sons, with my youngest a freshmen at MIT. In 1996 after I became a Naval officer, I was blessed to return to my hometown and visit coach at his office at Ursinus. We had a great conversation and I knew by the grin on his face, I had made him proud.
More importantly, I have taken the lessons I have learned from Coach and passed them onto others; whether it be the young men I led and trained in the military or the many athletes I have coached. I have been a coach myself my entire adult life and am currently a High School soccer coach. Although you are not physically with us, your legacy will continue, as for all those that you have touched are now spreading that onto others. I will be forever grateful for the profound impact that you have had on my life.
Fair winds and following seas Coach. The footprint of your life that you have left, will continue to become bigger and provide guidance and encouragement for generations to come.

I had Mr.Racich at Oaks Elementary as a gym teacher and then again in middle school as health teacher. He saw the good in people and tried to make a difference in his students' lives. He eminated a certain variety of confidence and cool that made students want to emulate him and inspired even the most lackidasical to try harder in his classes. It was through him that I found my love of sport.
The great teachers and coaches are the ones whose words and lessons reverberate throughout the course their students lives, constantlanly instructing and enriching. For me, Mr. Racich was one of those teachers. His voice has been there with me from the rugby pitch to the jujitsu mats to the trials and tribulations of the day to day. He will continue to be a mentor and a teacher to me for the rest of my life. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and so many countless others.

RIP Mr. Racich and may God continue to bless your family and all those whom you have left behind
Dear Mr. Racich, I want to thank you for the wonderful way you worked with all of the track students at Spring-Ford. All of my girls really loved working with you and they will always come home with fun stories from track and always looked forward each day coming for practice.
I recall one morning I was one of the chaperones on a school trip and I was walking with my girls when I heard you called out Nene and Ester have fun on your trip and I turned around and waved at you and asked the girls who that was and they said Mr. Racich. I remember thinking wow - he is really a good and caring coach
I know many will miss you and in particular Nene, Ester and Vania will miss you because you poured so much into each of them. You challenged them to take up some of the events they did not want to do and they excelled for that we are truly grateful and want to say thank you. When the girls came home the day they heard you were no longer with us, they were so sad. I looked at Vania as she shook her head and said "Such a good man"
Yes you were strict but good to the students and you will be really missed
God be with you and God bless your family

Tribute to Coach Racich from Nene Mokonchu
Coach Racich was more than a Coach in my eyes. No, he was almost a father figure to all Students and athletes. From gym class, to track practice and pac-10 championships, Coach Racich was always one of my biggest cheerleaders. He never hesitated to tell me how awesome of a person I was- both athletically and academically. Only he could encourage me to run 5 races back to back. I always enjoyed talking to him during school, whether track related, or fun chit chat. He'd always point out how great of a soccer player I was to the health class. Coach Racich was someone who applied passion in everything he did. Even in gym class, the least fit of the bunch found a safe haven in his class, knowing that he saw their efforts. I still am not able to fully comprehend his absence, probably because there is no way to picture a world without his wise cracks. I thank GOD for allowing me to know him.
Adieus Coach Racich - Nene
Tribute to Coach. Racich from Ester Mokonchu
Coach Racich was a force to be reckoned with. He made everyone he was around better and everyone he mentored better. I remember when he made us run campus runs and bleachers and everything that you wouldn't want to do. He would always demand, “Ester run faster, come on you can do it, don't let your sisters beat you.” But it made you that much better in your event. Mr. Racich would also always compliment someone for no reason at all. I recall him asking what events I was doing and when I answered he would say, “You are such a superstar”. Coach Racich had an impeccable way of indirectly pushing you to your limits, no one wanted to let him down. He was always there in the morning for talks and always checked in with injured athletes and gave them advice. Anyone who had Mr. Racich would know he holds everyone at an incredibly high standard. Annoying at first, but it proves to be helpful in guiding us to our full potential in a sport or event and makes us hard-working and humble athletes. I have always said and will continue saying that nothing is the same without Coach Racich in the vicinity, but I will try my hardest to carry the great impact he had on my life as my inspiration moving forward. I send my deepest condolences to the Racich family and will keep them in my prayers. Lots of Love Ester

Bill was a COACH through and through. Dedicated to helping his wrestlers on and off the mat. Over the years, I referred several talented wrestlers to Bill. I did this because I knew that they would not only be getting a great education, but they would have the benefit of wrestling for a coach that would guide them in the Right Direction in Life. Bill was a true professional and he will be greatly missed, however, his influence will carry on through all his family, friends, wrestlers and students that were fortunate enough to have known him.

A nice memory of coach Racich was when he would bring Mike Ortman and Bobby Katz up to Delaware Valley College to train with our team for the NCAA Division III wrestling tournament. I was always looking for good workout partners and those three were always more than willing to come to practice. I had to wrestle Mike each year in the NCAA Regional but we both were fortunate enough to qualify a few times together. We were both 158 pounders and as everyone knows coach Racich and Katzy were both super tough lightweights! When we would live wrestle the two of them would alternate periods on me and wear me down by the end of practice. The workouts were great and I learned so much. Coach Racich was technically sound and had a knack for going over the little things that Mike and I would need at the National Tournament. He will be missed by all!!!!

There are few men in my adult life that have had as much of an impact on me as Bill did. When I took over the head coaching position at McDaniel in 2007, he took me under his wing. We were both "part-time" head coaches teaching public school and he provided me with a template to be successful in that model. He took an interest in my personal life, and as time moved on, the communication between us shifted from mostly wrestling to mostly personal. He developed a nice friendship with my father and we did not have a meeting where he didn't ask about how my family was doing. I was not an athlete of his. We competed against each other for recruits, seeds, and dual meets. Despite this, he took a genuine interest helping me to be successful. The amount of guidance, scouting reports, and advice he gave me is too much to count. I take this gift with me every day. I am forever grateful.

I had the pleasure of working with Billy at SF 8th grade center. He was truly amazing with his students and especially the Special Ed students. Billy went out of his way to include all of them, he always made them feel special and gave them a sense of pride in their accomplishments. As my coworker, Billy always cared how we were doing, how our families were, he always had a smile and a great laugh. As a paraprofessional, Billy never treated me differently. When I retired he came to me and said, “Brownie enjoy your retirement in Florida, remember the good times here, and I appreciate all you’ve done to help all the kids you’ve come in contact with.” Then he gave me a big hug and said I better come back to visit.
Billy was and will always be the best example of a a husband, father, grandpop, coach, friend and mentor.

We were cousins, his mom was my dad's sister and we only met 1 time that I know of in Conshohocken over the 4th of July holiday in 1976. The only other person still around that I think I met back then was Buddy. I connected with Bill on Facebook after I had talked to a couple other family members trying to obtain some family history that I know very little of. Unfortunately we only spoke online a couple times, not nearly enough. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those he left behind. To exemplify the not only the great coach, but the great man that Bill Racich was, I share this true story: My former HS wrestler Mike Troutman, who had a great relationship with me, was at his third trip to nationals under Coach Racich, but and was previously unable to become All-American. Bill looked at the brackets and knew that Mike would face an opponent whom Mike had lost to twice previously in the match to become an All-American this third attempt. Bill called me a few days before the tournament to ask if I would fly out to Minnesota to help coach Mike in that match. I did, but I did not know that Bill would unselfishly give his coaches pass to me and go sit up in the cheap seats where he would only watch while I coached one of his favorite wrestlers to his first All-American finish. After Mike jumped into my arms immediately after winning that match I looked up at coach Racich, and all I could see his big bright smile and thumbs up! It was always about the success of the athlete as wrestlers and young men for Coach Bill Racich, not about himself. Thanks for perhaps my best wrestling coach memory Bill!

As a kid growing up at the middle school level in Wilmington, DE my father would take me to see a lot of college wrestling meets. I also had fond memories of West Chester University's Wrestling team when they had outstanding individuals back in the early 1970's in Alray Johnson, Paul Gillespie who placed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 1970, John Gallagher, Kent Gardner, along with Coaches Milton Collier and Dale Bonsall. They would have matches at the Hollinger Field House which is a good sized fieldhouse but it was loud with wrestling fans.
Another lightweight that I always remembered about was Bill Racich who was a short stocky wrestler who wrestled at 118 pounds he was quick and fast on his moves. As the years went by as Bill Racich was coaching at Ursinus College, I didn't remember Bill that well when he attended the Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament every year at the University of Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center which is one of the top 10 tournaments we started talking and he told me his name it bought me a lot of fond memories of the West Chester wrestling Golden Rams along with Bob Katz, Alray Johnson, Kent Gardner, Paul Gillespie. When I saw him at the Beast I said you still look the same but your more stronger and am glad that your doing well at Ursinus.
From one friend to another Bill Racich you have been a good friend to me and sharing memories about West Chester Wrestling and to the family God Bless All of You, RIP Bill and when it comes to death think about the 23rd Chapter in the Bible of Psalms read it and it talks about it.

What a life he lived and so many lives he has - and continues - to impact. He was a man who provided opportunities for his athletes to learn through both challenges and successes. He impacted my life before I ever knew him and I am better for knowing him. We all are.
He challenged us in sport to be our best. To use his coaching as a benchmark. We would sit across from each other in competition, sometimes in heated exchanges but mostly in small smiles and winks that only we picked up on. Stories of athletes we have loved and lost, and those we've loved and supported.
He promoted others (even rivals) in our sport and in life. He did that for me and I'll forever be in his debt. He saved our conference to allow opportunities for thousands of athletes to participate in and learn from our sport.
They say we each have two lives, one ends with the physical and one ends the last time your name is spoken. Bill's legacy and name will live a long long time through all his work.

I have known Coach Racich for 21 years. Always a smile. He is a worker, a hustler, a go-getter, a caring, friendly, warm man. For many years we attended the Ursinus Duals and his Ursinus Tournament. He always did what was best for the sport. Two occasions he helped our team. One, our bus broke down in the morning. He came with people & cars and got our guys to weigh-ins for the tourney. Another our scale broke and he lent us a scale for the night. He always did nice things, caring things to help others. I always loved seeing his happy face and personality at the NWCA conventions each year. It would always be a nice hello, check in with the family, and talk with my wife and kids. Coach Racich is a great person, great man, great coach and I am fortunate to have met him and worked with him. I am better and we are all better for having Coach Bill Racich in our lives. My condolences to the family and friends. Let us all remember Coach Racich and CELEBRATE HIS LIFE.
Love,
Drew Black

I only knew Bill for a short time. From the first day I met Bill and Julia at the NWCA convention in Ft. Lauderdale I knew he was special. His energy, enthusiasm and passion for life were infectious. You will be missed Coach. RIP
